Watch Out for the Pregnant Workin' Mama

Once again, I'm having difficulty deciding what to write about this morning. So many exciting things are happening. I started Bradley method birth education classes last week. Baby boy woke me up in the middle of the night for the first time last Tuesday. I'm finally one of the most pregnant women in prenatal yoga class. And this Wednesday, I start the third trimester.

I'm going to put that part of life on hold to tell you about something else. Most of you know my boss moved and has been telecommuting for nearly 2 months. It's thrown a lot of extra work my way. Most days I'm the only person from communications that is physically in the office. That's all about to change because, as of February 1, I'm getting promoted to communications manager!

Leading the communications department is not something I expected to do during pregnancy. I thought I'd keep work responsibilities to a minimum and revel in baby land 24/7. But taking on extra responsibility has been a joy so far. It feels fabulous to know that I'm pursuing things that matter to me at the same time as becoming a mom.

Okay, so it's been tough, too. One night this past week, I collapsed on the sofa after work and called M to let him know I needed taken care of. He had to come home, walk the dogs, and fix dinner himself because I just couldn't help that night. But each day gets better and more and more organized. Most days I leave the office on time to exercise, cook a nutritious meal, and get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep. This weekend, I'm taking time to sort through the pile of resumes from people who are interested in the open writer/editor position. Things are coming together.

Being pregnant during this time is amazing. It keeps me rooted in reality instead of losing myself in work. Sometimes I'll be zoned out working on a project and baby boy will give me a good nudge to remind me he's here. I drop everything to pay attention to those nudges. On my way to the sofa that one night last week, I stopped by the baby room and fished through baby boy's growing clothes collection just to savor how overjoyed I am to have him on the way into my life.

  1. Wow! As someone who became the sole communications person in her office back in October, I salute you. :) You sound really happy about it, which is great--happy people definitely work better. If I lived closer, I'd apply to be your editor!

  2. Congrats on the promotion!
We did Bradley, too, and it was great for us. My husband wouldn't touch a childbirth book, but being in the class really got him up to speed on what to expect out of labor and birth. I had two midwives (also trained as doulas) with me almost the entire labor, but I just wanted HIM--I was surprised at how much.
I have a favorite book about new motherhood--I wish I'd read it sooner in my mommy journey. It's called What Mothers Do Especially When It Looks Like Nothing by Naomi Stadlen.
