| The rice cereal I fed Cameron |
After he was thoroughly spent, Cameron fell asleep in my arms and I sat there watching his face go pale and his lips lose color. Of course, I panicked. I called the pediatrician's office, and the nurse told me it was probably the rice cereal. She said to keep an eye on him and call back if he didn't get better by the afternoon.
For the first hour, I let him sleep in my arms so I could sob over him and make sure he was still breathing. At the start of the second hour I placed him in his swing and joined a conference call for work. Half way through the call, he woke up and, much to my relief, started nursing again. By the end of the call he was back to his alert, smiley self. What the heck?
This is actually the second time he's had this reaction. The first time was less severe and not as traumatic. I have a degree in dietetics and have taken classes in infant and child nutrition. Starting solid foods was supposed to be a cinch for me. But I don't have a clue how to proceed from here.

Give him an egg!
ReplyDeleteHelp is on the way!
ReplyDeleteRice cereal has almost no nutritional value. I started my babies on mashed up bananas and avocado. I then moved on to oatmeal (ground it myself in a blender - don't waste your money on 'baby' oatmeal). Mix it with a bit of breastmilk instead of water if you'd like. Also, it may be that he's not ready for 'food'. Wait a couple weeks and try again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice. I came across a book called Baby Led Weaning, which encourages finger foods around 6 months rather than spooning purees into your baby's mouth. I like that idea. Today I let Cam smash avocados all over the tray of his Johnny Jump Up. Seems like at least a couple smears made it into his mouth.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to do Baby Led Weaning with my newest LO too (after doing 2 babies on purees). I like the idea plus, with a 4-yr-old and 2-yr-old in the hosue I just don't have the time to spoon-feed a baby if it's not necessary.
ReplyDeleteI've read that sweet potatoes are a good thing to try. They've got lots of nutritional value. I agree that avocados and bananas are good to mash up, too. We'll be starting the sweet potatoes this weekend. I'll keep you posted.
ReplyDeletemy baby has just started on solids and I gave her carrot. She seemed to really love it. Although I think she liked being in control of the spoon more! I hope your wee boy likes his next food better. His first try sounds pretty darn scary!
